last-minute gifts for real foodies

I’m a last-minute shopper.  I can’t help it.  It’s part of what makes me who I am.  So if you’re like me, here’s five last-minute gifts for the real foodies in your life.  And, if I might be so bold, there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself either.

for the newcomer: nourishing traditions

So if you’re one of the handful of cooks who hasn’t yet picked up a copy ofNourishing Traditions, it’s about time you did.  The book contains over 700 recipes, but, perhaps even more importantly, it serves as a treatise on the philosophy behind traditional foods.  (I have two copies: a hardcover for me and a softcover I loan out.)

Where to Get It: You can find Nourishing Traditions through online, independent book sellers (see sources) or through Amazon.
CostNourishing Traditions typically retails for $27.00 but is on sale at Amazon for $16.32.

for the foodie: bottarga

Bottarga is the salted and dried roe of the grey mullet and is a specialty food prized in the Mediterranean, particularly in Sardinia where it is often grated and served over pasta.  Bottarga, like all roe, is extraordinarily high in omega-3 fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins A and D.

Where to Get It: You can find bottarga at specialty food stores – orbuy it online like I do.
Cost: Bottarge will typically cost about $30.

for the cook: immersion blender

In the winter when warm soups find their way to our table at least daily, I would never be caught without the immersion blender.  I also use it to prepare mayonnaises because it’s quick, efficient and takes up very little space.

Where to Get It: You can find it here.
Cost: This immersion blender typically retails for $55, but is on sale at Amazon for $23.99.

for the gardener: a countertop herb garden

So, I’ve wanted one of these for years.  YEARS, I tell you.  Simply because, I love growing and cooking with fresh herbs as they enliven any dish and pack such a beautiful composition of flavors that can’t be replicated by dry herbs alone.  With the countertop kit, you  can grow your own fresh herbs year-round.

Where to Get It: You can find it here.
Cost: At $149.95, it’s not light on the budget, but oh what a beautiful gift.

for the fermentation enthusiast: a continuous brewing kit

And, lastly, for the fermentation enthusiast whose kitchen resembles a biology lab with ferments of this and that stuffed into cupboards and crocks, I recommend taking a look at a continuous brew kit for your kombucha.  These kits ensure that you always have kombucha at the ready.

Where to Get It: You can find it here.
Cost: At $189 – $249.
